Así fue el homenaje que Tom Morello hizo a Víctor Jara durante su visita a Chile con Prophets of Rage

«Él fue el Bob Dylan de Latinoamérica. Conocido popularmente por su excelente catálogo de canciones, muchas de ellas con temas de justicia social». Así comienza el post de Instagram con el que Tom Morello, el histórico guitarrista de Rage Against the Machine, rindió tributó a la vida y obra de Víctor Jara, a quien considera uno de sus compositores favoritos.

A lo largo del texto, el músico explica la influencia de Jara en la cultura musical latinoamericana, además de relatar su trágico final tras la dictadura militar que se impuso en Chile el 11 de septiembre de 1973. «Él es un héroe y una leyenda del Tercer Mundo; deberían conocer su música», explica.

Por lo mismo, junto al texto, Morello puso una imagen del reverso de la guitarra que ocupó durante su show en Santiago, donde aparece la leyenda «Justicia para Víctor Jara». En el post también hizo énfasis en este punto: «No one has ever brought to justice for the crime».

A esto se suma una declaración realizada antes del show a Publimetro, donde también habló sobre el cantautor chileno: «Una de mis inspiraciones es Víctor Jara y en nuestra música tenemos el mismo propósito. Esta banda no es para entretener, es para inspirar. Siento que cuando nos subamos al escenario de Chile lo estaremos vengando».

After the CIA backed fascist coup against the democratically elected socialist government of #SalvadorAllende in 1973 ‘dissidents’ were rounded up and warehoused in Santiago Stadium. Victor was recognized and the fascists smashed his hands to bloody pulps with a hammer, laughed, and said «Now try to play one of your communist songs!» Defiantly Victor stood before the assembled prisoners/dissidents and sang his last song. He was murdered by the fascists shortly thereafter. No one has ever been brought to justice for the crime. He’s a legend and hero throughout the Third World and you should check out his music. #justiciaforvictorjara @prophetsofrage

Tom Morello se presentó durante la noche del miércoles 3 de mayo en el Movistar Arena junto a Prophets of Rage, banda compuesta por miembros de Rage Against The Machine, Cypress Hill y Public Enemy. El concierto se realizó en Santiago bajo el marco de su gira «Make America Rage Again».

Ante más de 6 mil personas, el súpergrupo interpretó canciones de los distintos proyectos de quienes los integran, centrándose sobre todo en la obra de Rage Against the Machine, donde están presentes el bajista Tim Commerford, el baterista Brad Wilk y el ya mencionado Morello. El resto de la banda lo complementan Chuck D y DJ Lord de Public Enemy, y B-Real de Cypress Hill.

Durante el show presentaron también canciones originales de Prophets of Rage, tales como ‘The Party’s Over’ y ‘Unfuck the World’. Además, tuvo de invitada a la rapera chilena Ana Tijoux, quien participó en el cover de The White Stripes ‘Seven Nation Army’.

En la instancia también se presentó la banda argentina Bersuit Vergarabat.
