La primera confesión pública de un golfista del PGA: «Pasé demasiado tiempo fingiendo, escondiéndome y odiando lo que era”

“Soy homosexual y creí que no necesitaba salir del armario porque no importa si alguien lo sabe”. Con esta frase confesó su homosexualidad el golfista estadounidense Tadd Fujikawa, con una publicación este jueves en su cuenta de Instagram que se convierte en la primera confesión abierta de un jugador del circuito PGA.

El joven, de 27 años -el más joven en lograr el éxito en un evento del PGA Tour-, escribió que “siempre tuve miedo de lo que otros pensarían o ​​dirían. He luchado con mi salud mental durante muchos años por eso y me puso en un lugar realmente malo”. Y añadió: “Pero recuerdo lo mucho que las historias de otros me han ayudado en mis momentos más sombríos a tener esperanza. Pasé demasiado tiempo fingiendo, escondiéndome y odiando lo que era”, añadió.

Fujikawa dijo “ahora me defiendo a mí mismo y al resto de la comunidad LGBTQ con la esperanza de ser una inspiración y hacer una diferencia en la vida de alguien”.

El golfista dijo que continuará «haciendo todo lo posible» para concientizar sobre la diversidad sexual y luchar por la igualdad: «Debemos liberarnos y alentarnos unos a otros”, expresó. Y cerró: “Ser lo mejor de nosotros mismos, sea lo que sea. Es la única forma en que podemos hacer de este mundo un lugar mejor para las generaciones futuras. Hagamos nuestra parte para hacer de este mundo un lugar mejor”, agregó.

Según la información ofrecida por el PGA Tour, el golfista, nacido en Honolulu (Hawai, Estados Unidos) y de origen japonés, ganó en 2017 el Hawai State Open, su primer triunfo profesional en siete años de competición.

En la competición de golf femenina (LPGA) varias jugadoras -entre otras, Karrie Webb, Jane Geddes o Anya Alvarez- han hecho pública su homosexualidad.

I’ve struggled with my mental health for many years because of that and it put me in a really bad place. Now I’m standing up for myself and the rest of the LGBTQ community in hopes of being an inspiration and making a difference in someone’s life. Although it’s a lot more accepted in our society today, we still see children, teens, and adults being ridiculed and discriminated against for being the way we are. Some have even taken their lives because of it. As long as those things are still happening, I will continue to do my best to bring more awareness to this issue and to fight for equality. Whether the LGBTQ is what you support or not, we must liberate and encourage each other to be our best selves, whatever that may be. It’s the only way we can make this world a better place for future generations. I don’t want this to be focused on me. I just want to spread love and acceptance to others who are in a similar situation. If anyone out there is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
